Now, if you are dead set on NOT paying for a forum software, then there are a couple decent alternatives. However, if you are really serious about community building, vBulletin is the only way to go.

Why is vBulletin the Best?

In our opinion, vBulletin is the best primarily because people know it. It is the industry standard. It is our belief that communities grow better with vBulletin because they’ve seen it before and they know how to use it.

Secondly, vBulletin is fairly easy to use. For the administrator and the user, vBulletin is feature rich, and is fairly dummy friendly.

Thirdly, vBulletin has a HUGE community behind it. There are many forums dedicated to managing and modifying vBulletin, including vBulletin.com itself. vBulletin also has the best mod and plugin site available at vBulletin.org. There is a large community of developers at vB.org that have built some pretty amazing plugins for your forum.

Fourthly, no other forum software has SEO plugins like vBulletin. The guys over at vBSEO.com have done an amazing job at making vBulletin Search Engine Friendly.
